Dear McAuliffe Families and Friends,
The school year is well under way! In two short months we have
been able to accomplish so much here at school. We have hosted two parent
forums, held two PTO fundraisers, welcomed parents at Open House, and had two
“awesome” green parties. Most importantly, however, is the skillful and
engaging instruction being carried out each and every day in every classroom by
the city’s best teachers!
As you know, children are expected to be strong readers and
mathematical thinkers. In order for our children to be successful and
prepared to meet the demands of our ever-changing global society, much needs to
be covered in the elementary years. Here’s some of what you can expect to
be happening across all grades K – 4th :
*Interactive Read
Alouds: – In every classroom there
is a 15 minute reading block set aside for the teacher to read aloud to the
class and for students to respond to the reading in writing. Questions
you could ask your child about this, “What story did your teacher read aloud
today? What did you stop
and jot about the story?
What were the illustrations like in your read aloud text?
*Expert Books: Every student K- 4 will choose a topic that they
know much about and write an “expert “ book. This might be in the form of a
book that teaches the reader about a specific topic or in a “how to” text
informing the reader of important steps they need to complete to create
something new. I recently read, “How
to Change A Diaper” by an author
in second grade. J
*Math Problem Solving: All mathematicians at the McAuliffe School
are using the same guide to solve word problems in math. It is referred to as CUBES: C = Circle the key numbers, U =
Underline the question, B = Box any math action words, E = Evaluate what steps
you need to take, S = Solve and check.
As you can see, we are working very hard to grow strong and
solid students. Your support of our progress is welcomed and encouraged!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday,Nan Murphy
